Tarangire is the elephant park. During the dry season (June–October), the Tarangire River is the only permanent water source for 3,000+ square kilometres. Every elephant in the ecosystem must come here to drink. It is not unusual to watch herds of 200–400 elephants at the river bank in a single afternoon.

Beyond the elephants, Tarangire's landscape is uniquely dramatic — ancient baobab trees that predate the Roman Empire, swamps full of oryx and buffalo, and a riverine forest that shelters leopards and lions in its shadows. Over 550 bird species make Tarangire one of Tanzania's finest birding destinations.

Most safaris use Tarangire as the opening park before moving to the Serengeti. Safaris Tanzania' guides prefer it as a full-day experience — two game drives here consistently produce more diverse and concentrated wildlife than the Serengeti at similar time.

From the field

Visitors underestimate Tarangire. They think the Serengeti is the only place for wildlife. Then we sit for two hours watching 300 elephants at the river bend — children, teenagers, matriarchs. Nothing matches it for raw elephant behaviour.

Best Time to Visit Tarangire National Park

July to October is the dry season peak — wildlife concentrates at the Tarangire River. Elephants are guaranteed at the water. Green season (December–May) has fewer animals at the river but lush vegetation, newborns, and excellent birdwatching with migratory species.

Insider Tip

The swamp area in the southern sector is where tree-climbing lions are most often seen — this behaviour is rare and specific to certain Tarangire prides. Ask your guide specifically for the swamp loop in the morning.
