Fourteen days is the itinerary length that allows Tanzania to be genuinely explored rather than sampled. A 5–7 day northern circuit is an excellent first safari. Fourteen days adds depth: more time in the Serengeti, the possibility of including the southern parks (Ruaha or Nyerere), a Zanzibar extension, or a more measured pace through the north that allows the landscape to become familiar rather than rushed.
This guide presents a framework 14-day itinerary, the logic behind the structure, and what a 14-day Tanzania trip costs. Safaris Tanzania builds every itinerary to specification — the structure below is a starting point for the conversation, not a fixed product.
Framework Itinerary: 14 Days, Northern Circuit + Zanzibar
The most popular 14-day structure for first-time Tanzania visitors combines a thorough northern circuit (8–9 days) with a Zanzibar beach extension (5–6 days).
Days 1–2: Arusha and Tarangire National Park
Arrive Kilimanjaro International Airport. Transfer to Arusha. Rest and acclimatise. Day 2: drive to Tarangire (2 hours from Arusha). Full afternoon game drive. Tarangire in the dry season concentrates wildlife around the Tarangire River — elephant herds of 200–300, large lion prides, and a density of animals that surprises most first arrivals. Overnight tented camp near Tarangire.
Days 3–4: Tarangire, Full Days
With 14 days, there is no need to rush through Tarangire in half a day. Two full days allows morning and afternoon game drives with rest in the heat of midday. The second day often produces the sightings the first day approached — predator activity patterns become familiar, and your guide can position you ahead of the action. Overnight tented camp.
Days 5–7: Central Serengeti
Drive north through the Ngorongoro highlands to the Serengeti central corridor — Seronera. Three nights in the Serengeti's year-round wildlife zone: lion prides with cubs, leopard in the riverine acacias, cheetah on the open plains. Two full days of game driving plus morning drives on arrival and departure days. Overnight permanent tented camp, central Serengeti.
Days 8–9: Northern Serengeti (Seasonal)
For July–October travel, two nights in the northern Serengeti (Kogatende / Lamai area) positions you at the Mara River crossings — the central spectacle of the Great Migration, where columns of wildebeest attempt the crocodile-filled crossing into Kenya and back. This is the most dramatic wildlife event in Africa. If your dates do not coincide with the river crossing season, the central Serengeti schedule can be extended or the Ndutu area (calving season, January–February) substituted.
Day 10: Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Drive from the Serengeti east to the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Arrive late afternoon for sundowner views from the rim (600m above the crater floor). The evening light on the caldera is one of the most cinematic scenes in Tanzania.
Day 11: Ngorongoro Crater Descent
Full day on the crater floor. Dawn descent into the caldera — the fog clearing from the rim as you drive down. All Big Five in the Ngorongoro Crater, including the approximately 26–30 black rhino that live here permanently. Hippo pools at Lake Magadi. Flamingos on the soda flat. Ascent in the afternoon. Return to Arusha overnight (or fly directly to Zanzibar if timing allows).
Days 12–14 (or longer): Zanzibar
Fly from Kilimanjaro or Arusha to Zanzibar (45-minute flight, multiple daily connections). The combination of bush and beach is Tanzania's most popular itinerary structure — the contrast between the Serengeti and the Indian Ocean reefs is genuinely striking and the transition is logistically simple. Three days in Zanzibar is a minimum; five or six is more comfortable. Accommodation ranges from boutique guesthouses in Stone Town to private beach villas on the northeast coast.
Alternative 14-Day Structure: North + South
For repeat visitors or travellers who prioritise wildlife over beach, a north-plus-south structure is more adventurous and more expensive:
- Days 1–7: Northern circuit (Tarangire, Serengeti, Ngorongoro) as above
- Day 8: Fly Arusha → Dar es Salaam → Ruaha (one connection, typically 3–4 hours total travel)
- Days 9–11: Ruaha National Park — walking safaris, open-vehicle drives, wild dog territory, the Great Ruaha River. A fundamentally different ecosystem and atmosphere from the north.
- Day 12: Fly Ruaha → Dar es Salaam → Selous/Nyerere, or directly to Zanzibar
- Days 12–14: Nyerere National Park — boat safari on the Rufiji River, fly-camping, or Zanzibar extension
This structure requires internal flights at each transition (Arusha→Dar, Dar→Ruaha, Ruaha→Dar/Selous). The additional flight costs are significant — budget an additional $624–900 per person for the internal segments. The result is a Tanzania itinerary that covers ecosystems and experiences unavailable to northern-circuit-only travellers.
What a 14-Day Tanzania Safari Costs
A 14-day northern circuit plus Zanzibar extension for two people, booked directly through Safaris Tanzania:
- Safari component (11 nights, private vehicle, mid-range camps): approximately $2,912–3,400 per person depending on season and accommodation tier
- Zanzibar accommodation (3 nights, mid-range beach hotel): approximately $260–500 per person
- Internal flights (Kilimanjaro → Zanzibar): approximately $125–180 per person
- International flights: not included — these are booked independently
The north-plus-south structure adds the internal flight costs described above. Both structures are available at premium camp tiers (private camps, exclusive-use properties) at significantly higher per-night costs — Kassim will price these on request.
The above are framework figures. Safaris Tanzania provides fully itemised quotes that break down park fees, accommodation, vehicle costs, and guide costs separately. Nothing is bundled or hidden.
Best Time for a 14-Day Tanzania Safari
The northern circuit delivers excellent wildlife year-round, but the best conditions vary by season:
- January–February: Calving season in the Ndutu area (southern Serengeti/Ngorongoro Conservation Area). 500,000 wildebeest calves born in 3 weeks, with concentrated big cat activity. Excellent photography light.
- June–October: Dry season. Best game viewing conditions — low vegetation, wildlife concentrated at water. July–October: Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti.
- November–December: Short rains (lighter than long rains, often afternoon showers only). Prices drop. Parks quieten significantly. Still excellent wildlife — the Serengeti's resident wildlife is present year-round.
April and May (long rains) are the low season. A 14-day trip in April–May is feasible and dramatically cheaper, but conditions require realistic expectations about rain and road access.
