Tanzania safari quotes are not always comparable on headline price alone. What one operator includes, another excludes — and the difference between a full-inclusive quote and a stripped-down one can be $624–900 per person on a 7-day itinerary. This guide explains what a complete quote should include and what to ask about when something is missing.

What Should Always Be Included
Park and Conservation Fees
Tanzania National Parks (TANAPA) entry fees are among the highest of any national park system in the world. A 7-day northern circuit safari involves park fees of approximately $146–200 per person depending on which parks are included. Ngorongoro Conservation Area charges a separate NCA fee plus a crater service fee.
Current TANAPA park fees (2026): Serengeti $85/person/day, Ngorongoro Conservation Area $85/person/day plus a vehicle descent fee of $307–300 per vehicle, Tarangire $55/person/day, Lake Manyara $55/person/day. These fees are fixed by the government and are identical for every visitor regardless of operator.
Some operators quote a base price and list park fees separately. This is not inherently dishonest — it is a presentation choice. But it means your quoted price is not your real price. Always ask: are park fees included?
Accommodation
Full-board (all meals included) is standard on safari. If a quote specifies "bed and breakfast" or "half board", meals are an additional cost. In remote parks where there are no restaurants outside your camp, this matters significantly.
Clarify what "full board" means at the lodge level. Some mid-range lodges include all meals; others include breakfast and dinner but charge separately for lunch. At luxury camps, "full board" typically includes all drinks (a full drinks package) — at budget camps, even water may be charged separately.
Transport
Game drives in a safari vehicle are the core of the product, but transport includes more than that: airport transfers, inter-park drives, and internal flights if applicable. Check whether your airport pickup and drop-off are included. Some budget operators add a transfer fee that does not appear in the headline price.
Also clarify: is the transfer in a safari vehicle (same vehicle used for game drives) or a separate shuttle? If your flight arrives late at night, is a night transfer included or does it cost extra?
Guiding
Your guide's daily rate should be included in the quote. Most professional Tanzanian operators employ guides directly and include their costs in the per-person price. Be wary of quotes where "guide" is listed as a separate line item — this may indicate the operator is subcontracting to freelance guides rather than using employed staff.
What Is Often Excluded
Gratuities (Tips)
Tipping guides, drivers, and camp staff is standard practice and expected. Guides typically receive $10–15 per day from the group; camp staff tips are usually pooled at $5–10 per day across all staff. On a 7-day safari with two people, budget approximately $156–200 for tips across all staff.
This is not a hidden cost — it is a known additional expense — but quotes rarely mention it. Ask explicitly: "What should I budget for tips?" A reputable operator will give you a clear figure upfront.
Tipping guideline for 7-day safari (two travellers):
- Lead guide: $16–20/day total = $109–140 for the trip
- Camp staff (cook, room staff): $8–12/day pooled = $58–84 for the trip
- Total tips budget: $166–225 for two people
Visa Fees
Most nationalities require a Tanzania tourist visa. An e-visa costs $52 USD for most nationalities (US citizens pay $104). This is your responsibility regardless of operator and is never included in a safari quote.
Apply for your e-visa at visa.immigration.go.tz before departure. Do not buy a visa on arrival unless you enjoy long queue waits — the e-visa process takes 5–10 working days.
Travel Insurance
Travel insurance is your responsibility. A policy covering medical evacuation is strongly recommended for safari travel. Medical evacuation from the Serengeti to Nairobi or Dar es Salaam costs $8,320–15,000 without insurance. Budget $83–150 for a comprehensive policy.
What to verify in your policy: medical evacuation (helicopter, international), hospitalization coverage, trip cancellation, and personal belongings. Standard travel insurance often excludes "adventure activities" — confirm safari game drives are covered explicitly.
Alcoholic Beverages
Most safari camps and lodges include non-alcoholic drinks (water, tea, coffee, soft drinks) in full-board rates. Alcoholic beverages are typically charged separately at lodge rates. This varies by property: premium camps include a full drinks package; budget camps charge for everything beyond water. Check before you arrive.
Safari lodge bar prices are significantly higher than local rates: local beers $3–6, imported beers $5–8, house wine $5–10 per glass, premium wines $10–20 per glass. A couple can easily spend $52–100 per day on drinks at mid-range lodges with open bars.
Laundry
Some camps include laundry in the rate; others charge per item ($2–5 per item). On longer safaris this can add up. Confirm with your operator before departure.
Single Supplement
Solo travellers on group safaris are typically charged a single supplement — an additional fee for occupying a shared vehicle or accommodation alone. On private custom safaris, the per-person cost is simply higher for one person than for two sharing. This is not hidden but is sometimes presented confusingly.
The single supplement exists because lodges charge per room, not per person. A $187/night lodge charges solo guests $187 — the same rate two people would split. This means solo travellers pay approximately double the per-person accommodation cost compared to couples. A 7-day solo mid-range safari typically costs $4,680–6,000 versus $2,496–3,200 per person for two travellers.
Mount Kilimanjaro Climb combines well with a safari for solo travellers wanting to maximise their Tanzania trip — but note that Kilimanjaro climbs also carry single supplement charges for solo trekkers.
Conservation and Community Levies
Several Tanzania parks and conservation areas charge additional levies beyond standard entry fees. These are often omitted from quotes:
- Ngorongoro Crater vehicle descent fee: $307–300 per vehicle (not per person) — always ask if this is included
- Lake Manyara Nitrogren fee: $47 per vehicle — charged at Lake Manyara
- Maasai Village visit: $21–50 per person if your itinerary includes cultural visits
- RMV radio fee: $5–10 per person in some parks for emergency radio communication

Red Flags in Quotes
These are warning signs that a quote is either incomplete or obscuring the true total cost:
- Quoted price significantly below comparable operators. Tanzania safari costs are largely determined by park fees, accommodation rates, and fuel — which are fixed. A price well below the market almost always means something is excluded or the accommodation category is lower than described.
- Park fees listed as "approximately" or "subject to change". TANAPA publishes fixed fee schedules. An operator who cannot give exact park fee figures either does not know them or is obscuring the total cost.
- No mention of vehicle type. A 4WD Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof hatch is the standard safari vehicle. Minibuses are used by high-volume budget operators and affect both game viewing and road comfort significantly.
- Shared vehicle with unspecified group size. "Group safari" can mean 2 people or 8. In a 9-seat Land Cruiser with 7 passengers, window seat access and movement is limited.
- Crater fee not mentioned. The Ngorongoro Crater vehicle descent fee ($307–300) is commonly omitted from quotes that appear competitive. Ask: "Is the Ngorongoro crater vehicle fee included?"
- Accommodation described vaguely. "Luxury tented camp" can mean anything from a $208/night mid-range option to a $1,560/night ultra-luxury property. Ask for specific lodge names and then verify their actual price category.
- No mention of single supplement for solo travellers. If you are solo and the quote does not address single occupancy, it may be unclear how this will be handled.
What These Extras Actually Add Up To
For a typical 7-day mid-range safari for two people, here is what the excluded costs add up to beyond your safari package price:
| Extra Cost | Budget | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Visa (per person) | $52–100 | Per person |
| Travel insurance | $83–150 | Per person |
| Tips (7 days, 2 people) | $166–225 | Total for group |
| Alcoholic drinks | $52–100 | Per person, estimate |
| Balloon safari (optional) | $572–600 | Per person |
| International flights | $832–1,400 | Per person, economy |
| Total extras (excl. flights) | $406–1,125 | Per person |
How Safaris Tanzania Quotes
Safaris Tanzania quotes are full-inclusive: park fees, accommodation, all meals, airport transfers, guiding, and fuel. The only standard exclusions are personal tips (explained upfront), visa fees, travel insurance, and alcoholic drinks above camp-included beverages.
We quote the Ngorongoro Crater vehicle descent fee separately from the overall package because it is charged per vehicle rather than per person — and the per-person cost varies depending on how many passengers are in your group. We always disclose this explicitly so you can calculate the exact total.
When comparing quotes, send Kassim the competing quotes. He will walk through them line by line and explain what is included and what is missing — honestly, regardless of whether you book with Safaris Tanzania.
