July and August are the two most popular months for a Tanzania safari, and they are frequently treated as interchangeable peak season options. They are not identical. The differences — in migration timing, river crossing frequency, crowd levels, and camp availability — matter enough to influence which month is better for your specific trip. This guide makes the comparison directly.

Migration Timing
July: The herds arrive in the northern Serengeti in late June to early July, having crossed through the western corridor. The first Mara River crossings typically begin in late June or the first week of July. Mid-July often sees the most frequent crossing activity as the herds consolidate north of the river. The migration is building — dynamic, moving, hard to predict from day to day.
August: The herds are established in the northern Serengeti and the Maasai Mara. Crossings are at their most frequent in early to mid-August. By late August, a significant portion of the herds have crossed into Kenya, and some return crossings (south to north, from Kenya back into Tanzania) begin. The migration is peaking and then beginning its southern retreat.
Verdict for river crossings: August generally delivers more frequent crossings in a single safari than July, because the herds are fully established and the pressure to move is constant. July offers the excitement of the migration arriving — more dynamic, less predictable. If you want maximum crossing probability, August is marginally stronger. If you want to witness the migration's movement and drama, July has an energy that August's settled herds lack.

Crowd Levels
July: Busy. Peak season crowds are present from early July. Seronera and the central Serengeti have significant vehicle traffic. Northern Serengeti crossing points attract competing vehicles. School holiday travel from Europe (particularly the UK) runs from late July.
August: Busier. August includes European school holidays, North American summer holidays, and the peak of the migration season simultaneously. Vehicle density at crossing points is highest in August. Popular camps are at full occupancy for most of the month.
Verdict for solitude: July — particularly early to mid-July before European school holidays begin — is the less crowded peak month. If crowd management is a priority, early July or late September are stronger options than August.
Camp Availability and Booking Lead Time
July: Northern Serengeti camps (the migration hotspot) typically sell out 6–9 months in advance. Booking in January for July is standard. Some flexibility remains if you are adaptable on camp type.
August: August sells out faster than July. Premium northern Serengeti camps for August are often fully booked by October of the preceding year. If you have not started planning by November for the following August, your camp options will be limited. Kassim can advise on what is still available and which alternatives deliver comparable access to the migration.
Verdict for booking ease: July is easier to book. August requires the most advance planning of any month on the calendar.
Pricing
Safaris Tanzania prices are identical for July and August — both are peak season. A 7-day Great Migration safari runs at $2,288 per person in both months. There is no pricing advantage to choosing one over the other.
Where pricing differences appear is in accommodation — premium northern Serengeti camps with exclusive river access charge higher rates in August than July at some properties. This is camp-specific and worth asking Kassim about when he provides your quote.
Weather
Both months are firmly in the dry season. Rain is negligible. Daytime temperatures are nearly identical: 25–29°C in the Serengeti, cool mornings on the Ngorongoro rim. August tends to be slightly dustier as the dry season extends — this is a minor distinction but relevant for photographers and those sensitive to dust.
The Summary Comparison
- Best for river crossings: August (crossings most frequent), closely followed by July
- Best for fewer vehicles: Early July
- Best for booking flexibility: July
- Best for combining with Tarangire: August (elephants at maximum concentration)
- Price difference: None (both peak)
What Kassim Recommends
For first-time visitors who have flexibility: early July. The migration is arriving, the crossings are beginning, the park is busy but not at its August peak, and booking lead time is more forgiving.
For travellers whose sole priority is witnessing a river crossing: late July to mid-August. This is the statistical peak for crossing frequency.
